ADULT GARDEN WORKSHOP

Take home plantings. Topics include but not limited to: Fall Harvest and preservation, soil care, pruning, bulb planting, organic pest control, flower arranging, preparing indoor winter gardens, winterizing outside garden, hydroponics, herb medicine cultivation, new innovations in composting. We will experiment with making healthy smoothies, non-alcoholic herbal concoctions and work the apple cider press. Rain or shine.

Participants will draw from their own gardening goals, embracing traditional and alternative gardening practices, bridging horticultural experiments at Weinberg to one's home environment.

Based on the European forest school and Montessori approaches to education, Little Ferns integrates nature, skill-building, and applied literacy education, utilizing multiple learning sites at the Nature Center: 6 outdoor educational classroom sites, open green, greenhouse, outside garden, compost station, hiking trails and 2 indoor classrooms (including an Animal Room with 25 animal species). STEAM-programs are 80% outdoors during warm months and about 40-60% outdoors during cold months. Students connect with local flora and fauna as well as the 28 resident animal species, daily. Little Ferns closely follows the Scarsdale school calendar year.

Get to know resident Weinberg animals and wildlife while hiking, making campfires and roasting marshmallows, performing nature arts, Autumn gathering, shelter-building and storytelling.
